Brazil - Music Piracy & Copyright Infringement Report, 2018

Report Description

The consumption of music in the world of the internet has become way easier then ever before. The music industry has evolved over the years with innovations in new technologies. The easy accessibility of free music is causing major economic losses to the music artists. Copyright infringement is one of the biggest issues the artists are facing in this time and age.

Brazil- Music Piracy & Copyright Infringement Report, 2018 focuses on addressing the growing problem of online music piracy. The ease of getting free access to pirated music without the fear of being liable is the main reason for the growth of music piracy.

The recorded music industry faces a lot of struggle due to growth of malpractices in the music industry. The policy makers have now taken into consideration the role of unauthorized sharing in the music market. The technological changes have also reduced the effective degree of protection of copyright. Before the Internet, recorded music was sold on CDs bundling up with 12 songs. In that case the consumer had no other option, and that helped the labels to earn revenue.

As the internet arrived it affected both the demands and cost of music production. The marginal cost of the distribution of music fell. The record labels were quite slow to adapt digital distribution channels, and that was one the reason why they face a huge loss in their revenue.

The report has elucidated various legal norms that deals with the artists, record labels and broadcasters. It also explains the market structure of music industry in Brazil and how piracy is affecting different music platforms.

The consumption of music is increasing but so it music piracy. the artists and record labels are facing huge losses because they are not getting any royalty. The government authorities are not well equipped yet to find the copyright infringers online and stop this activity.

The report has included various recommendations that are helpful for the artists to secure their copyright and track the wrong doers through new technological means. The music industry is using a comprehensive, multi-prolonged approach. By including consumer education on copyright and the value of music, working along with law enforcement agencies to tackle online piracy, filing cases against online pirated music services and engaging the legislators and the policy makers’ worldwide so as to create an environment which would help in securing the music industry and grow. The industry has also started to work with online stores so that they can remove the infringing apps and ensure that apps cannot access illegal websites.

Music Industry has lost up to $32 BN in 2017.
